Refrigerant sight glasses play a crucial role in ensuring the optimal performance of refrigeration systems. They help monitor refrigerant flow, detect moisture, and assess the system’s health.
In this guide, we’ll explore the different types of refrigerant sight glasses, their functionality, and their significance in maintaining efficient cooling systems.

What is a Refrigerant Sight Glass?
A refrigerant glass is a transparent window installed in the liquid line of the refrigeration and HVAC system that detects refrigeration flows and whether the liquid line is full or contains bubbles.
If the liquid line contains bubbles, it indicates a liquid/vapor mixture, which means insufficient refrigerant or improper system operation. A glass confirms a full line of liquid refrigerant.
What Types of Refrigerant Sight Glass?
Please check refrigerant sight glass to know more types.
Refrigerant sight glasses come in various types, categorized by their design, function, and connection style to suit different applications and system requirements.
Sight glasses can be classified according to application:
HVAC sight glass: It can be used for heat pumps, wine cellar cooling units, precision air conditioners, VRF air conditioners, etc.
Air conditioner sight glass: It can be used for rail transport air conditioning, bus air conditioning, car air conditioning, etc.
Refrigeration sight glass: It can be used for transport refrigeration, cold room refrigeration units, and walk-in cooler condensing units.
Oil sight glass: This sight glass has a thread and is installed by screwing into the liquid line. It is used to observe oil levels in compressors, pressure vessels, and valve parts.
It is easy to install and maintain and ideal for systems requiring frequent maintenance. It is compatible with refrigerants like R134a, R407C, R410a, and oils (MO, POE, AB).
Sight glasses can be classified according to connection type. There are three common types of sight glass:
1. Threaded Refrigerant Sight Glass: Threaded refrigerant sight glass is mainly used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Its advantage is that it is easy to install. Its connection methods include external thread, internal and external thread connection.
2. Flange Refrigerant Sight Glass: This sight glass is installed on pressure vessels to observe liquid levels.
While installing, it must be connected to a straight body with minimal unevenness.
It is excellent for high-pressure applications and durable under temperature ranges. This is often found in industrial refrigeration systems and large-scale cooling plants.
3. Welding Refrigerant Sight Glass: This sight glass has a double internal interface and is welded directly onto the liquid line. It can detect water content inside refrigeration systems.
Its installation is substantial, leak-proof, and secure but requires skilled welding for proper attachment and is not easily removable or replaceable.
It is used with high vibration or extreme conditions where reliability is critical.
Some other types are based on the application, like SGI for CFC refrigerants, SGN for HCFC and HFC refrigerants, and SGR/SGRI/SGRN for vessel-mounted sight glasses or liquid level indication in receivers or compressors.
4. Saddle-Type Sight Glass: The advantage of saddle-type sight glass is its low price and it can be directly welded on the original refrigerant pipeline.
Some other types are based on the application, like SGI for CFC refrigerants, SGN for HCFC and HFC refrigerants, and SGR/SGRI/SGRN for vessel-mounted sight glasses or liquid level indication in receivers or compressors.
